Dear Parents / Guardians:
Through a partnership of the Manitoba government departments of Families, Education and Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living, we are writing to inform you that the 2020 Youth Health Survey (YHS) is set to be implemented in Hanover School Division, Spring 2020.

All Grade 7-12 students are eligible to participate in the online YHS survey between March and April. The survey usually takes about 35 to 45 minutes to complete. The YHS survey data will be collected under theprotection and authority of the Healthy Child Manitoba Act:
https://www.gov.mb.ca/healthychild/about/hcmact.html.  All survey responses are confidential.

Important: The YHS survey data will never be used to measure a child’s school performance nor teacher ability; results will never reported at an individual level (only at group level); and, results will never be part of a child’s school record.

This upcoming collection of the 2020 YHS marks the third province-wide cycle. The 2020 YHS asks questions about mental health, connectedness, bullying, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, and drug use, and nutrition, eating, sleeping, screen time and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The YHS provides a wide range of information at a population level to improve understanding, planning, and programing of supports related to the health and well-being of youth in Manitoba. In addition, the 2020 YHS has been identified as a key data source for the evaluation of several mental health and addictions initiatives aimed at improving student mental health and reducing addictions issues.

If you have any questions regarding the 2020 YHS, or would like additional information, or you wish to have your child/children not participate in the survey(s), please contact Administrative Secretary Maria Golke at the Hanover School Division Office at 204-326-6471 by March 20, 2020.

Kind Regards,

Colin Campbell
Assistant Superintendent
Hanover School Division
